Period: First half of the 18th century
SOLD Venetian flap desk, measuring 105 x 130 x 55 cm, in walnut, walnut burl moved centrally and laterally. This is a piece of furniture of refined cabinetmaking with fishbone walnut burl. Front with double accentuated undulation with broken pattern with sharp edges; rests on the ground with shaped bracket feet to form a whole with the upper part. This flap desk is a very common model in Veneto in the second quarter of the 1700s and is made in this way: A wavy cornice resting on shelves accompanies the harmonious concave-convex movement that builds the mobile skeletons tracing the restless profile of the drop-front top. Note in the double movement of the flap desk the thoughtful arrangement of walnut and burl within mirrors finely bordered by fillets with outcomes of substantial tonal homogeneity. Very important to note how even laterally the double movement is completely homogeneous with the central movement creating a fair mix of elegance, refinement and movement typical of the Venetian cabinetmaking of the early 1700s. We can notice in this piece of furniture the impeccable elegance of the proportions and the peaceful chiaroscuro aspect, while the bold lateral curve of the front is harmoniously compensated by the receding line of the sides.
