Measures H x L x P
Bergamasco wardrobe in solid walnut, made in the 17th century, measuring 240 x 165 x 65 cm, refined and elegant in every part, including the superb construction of the top.
This characteristic, almost always present in flap desks and trumeaux, is truly rare in wardrobes.
The structure of this piece of furniture is a Renaissance classic; the decorations and corbel feet support a slightly curved base with egg motifs that converge towards the center, creating two volutes at the intersection.
From each of the two corbels that decorate the sides of the wardrobe, the high band that separates the doors from the top descends along the two lateral pilasters in an elongated, high-relief carving depicting two children who, in playful, moving and winking poses, seem to support the wardrobe itself with one hand; from a mask hangs an exuberant leafy motif rich in fruits, interrupted by ribbons and ending in a bow.
The doors are divided into eight square panels by shaped frames, in turn sculpted by as many frames sculpted with acanthus leaf motifs.
In each panel, two thin concentric frames define, with a broken perimeter devoid of curves, a rigorously symmetrical motif.
A small frame divides the body with doors from the smooth band that highlights the top, strongly projecting and decorated on the lower side with dentils replaced in the shelf by molded rectangular elements alternating with small carved wooden decorations.
Delicate and elegant in the same way, a very rare characteristic for the time, is the decoration on the sides consisting of eight equal squares underlined by two concentric frames; all these qualities, considering the perfection in the construction of the furniture, make me think without a shadow of a doubt of a commission made for a noble and patrician family of the time.
