Mantua Corner Cupboard from the 17th Century
Period: 17th century
Price: € 6.700
Measures H x L x P
Mantua cupboard with dimensions of 200 x 118 x 62 cm from the early 17th century, entirely made of walnut wood both inside and out. The rectangular cutaway structure is enriched by pilaster strips framing the two doors, described by decorated panels with geometric bas-relief tiles according to the tradition of late Renaissance architecture. This cupboard also has chamfered corners, due to the cutaway, according to Tuscan styles of the High Renaissance. The pure line of the period lexicon is fully respected, and the volume as well as the overall layout anticipate solutions that will develop in northern Italy only at the end of the 17th century; the bevelling of the top tends to lighten the walnut of considerable thickness. The Mantuan scheme of this cupboard with two doors separated by a central pillar part and with two small side doors almost at an angle, which give balance, rhythm, and harmony to the furniture, is unmistakable. All parts of the furniture are marked by panels applied with linearity, characterized by a vertical trend. A piece of furniture that expresses elegance and sobriety, following still Renaissance canons and, above all, a symmetry of forms.
